Abstract

It exposes memory and truth actions in the state of Rio de Janeiro by Truth Commissions, based on the use of the archives of repression to support state accountability. It looks at how the commissions work, their procedures and results. It discusses the effectiveness of the commissions' work and their diversity in terms of motivations, objectives and methods. The lack of homogeneity in the processes, political influences, and human and financial resources all lead to disparate results.
